Diablo 3 on Playstation 3

Update (June 28): Diablo 3 has been announced at the WWI in Paris. You can now review the Diablo 3 trailer, screenshots, as well as demo.

Blizzard adopted Havok 4 recently. So will we be seeing Diablo 3 running on Havok 4.0? Some of the advantages that I see are that:

  1. Using an engine means they’ll complete Diablo 3 sooner (2007?)
  2. Havok supports Mac OSX, so making Diablo 3 run on a Mac will be seamless
  3. Havok supports PS3 so MAYBE we can see Diablo 3 on PS3.

The Diablo on Playstation stuff is perhaps premature BUT listen to this: Havok gets three times better performance from PS3 compared to a high-end PC. And why would Blizzard want an engine that does well on a console unless they plan to use it.

So we could be seeing Diablo 3 on Playstation as well. If we do, there’s a good chance Diablo 3 won’t be a MMO.

Diablo 3 – MMO or not?

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006
Update (June 28): Diablo 3 has been announced at the WWI in Paris. You can now review the Diablo 3 trailer, screenshots, as well as demo.

Paul Sams - Blizzard COO speaks on DiabloI recently blogged about Blizzard’s release dates in 2007 – all that based on an interview with Blizzard’s COO, Paul Sams. There was another comment from him that I thought was really important (though not as important as Diablo 3 release date).

In terms of what these games could be, we asked if they would fall in line with the major success Blizzard has had with World of Warcraft. “I want to be clear that we’re not just content to be an MMO company,” Sams explained. “Some other companies get into the role of making just MMOs, but Blizzard lets the developers pick what they want to work on, and it’s not all MMOs.”

Now, there have been endless discussions whether Diablo 3 will be a MMORPG. It could be that Blizzard’s next game will not be a MMO – just to balance their game portfolio. So if Diablo 3 is the next game to be announced, there’s a chance it won’t be a MMO like WOW (a.k.a. World of Diablo).
